Hong Kong: Strict licensing regime now in effect for virtual asset trading platforms

The 'deemed licensing' window for virtual asset exchanges operating in Hong Kong began on 1 June 2024. All virtual asset trading platforms operating in the jurisdiction must either be licensed by the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) or be ‘deemed-to-be-licensed’ virtual asset trading platforms applicants under the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorist Financing Ordinance enacted in 2023. Investors are being urged to trade virtual assets only on SFC-licensed platforms.
