14 June 2024 - WARNING: List seller scams
In recent years, we have seen a steady increase in 'list selling' emails claiming to have the STEP membership list, or an attendance list of one of STEP's conferences.
These emails are scams. STEP does not sell its membership lists. Please see our Privacy Policy for more information on how we look after your data.
These sorts of scams typically target membership organisation and conference organisers. If you google 'list selling scams' you will see many other organisations posting similar notices to alert their members to this practice. Typically, the companies these individuals claim to represent don't exist and the lists they are selling contain data they have collected from publicly accessible sources, if they have any data at all.
If you receive such a message, please email STEP's Data Protection Officer, Colin Blomfield, at colin.blomfield@step.org to let us know about it, and then delete the email. We have previously had some success in reporting and shutting down some accounts. Unfortunately, they can often spring up again under a new account.
Thank you to all the members who have reported instances of these scams.
For your information, below we have copied two examples of these emails:

16 January 2024 - WARNING: Scam email requesting payment
It has come to our attention that some members have received a scam email, purportedly from STEP, stating that their membership payment is overdue and asking them to make payment now to maintain their active status.
This email is a scam email and has not been sent by STEP.
You will see that the sender address in this instance is verify.membership@internet.ru – a Russian domain name. This is not a STEP domain. STEP emails will only come from @step-email.org or @step.org
We are in contact with Wix, the platform through which the email was created, to see if they can assist in tackling this issue.
In the meantime, please do not respond or click on any links, and ensure you report, block and delete these scam emails.
Screenshots of two such emails are below.
